Hope at Christmas in the Midst of Suffering
When we look back at this year, we cannot ignore the pain: floods that swept away homes in Vietnam and the Philippines, fires that destroyed entire neighborhoods in Japan, and violence that claimed innocent lives in Sydney. These tragedies remind us of the fragility of human life and the darkness that often surrounds us.
And yet, Christmas proclaims something astonishing: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5). The birth of Christ is not a denial of suffering, but God’s choice to enter into it, to be Emmanuel — God with us — even in the midst of disaster and violence.
Christmas invites us to see beyond destruction and grief, to discover the seed of hope that God plants in every situation. It calls us to solidarity, to comfort those who mourn, and to become instruments of peace and healing.

Lord Jesus Christ,
You are the Light that shines in every darkness.
In this year marked by floods, fires, and violence,

and strengthen those who work for peace and healing.
Teach us to walk in solidarity,
to carry one another’s burdens,
and to reflect Your love in our daily lives.
As we celebrate Your birth,
may Your presence renew our courage,
restore our hope,
and guide us into the way of peace. Amen.
Hope and Peace in the Light of God’s Son
Dear brothers and sisters, on this holy Sunday, we gather together and gaze upon the infant Jesus, the Son of God, in silent reflection. The words of the prophet Isaiah ring out: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.” (Isaiah 9:1). And the Gospel of John also declares: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5). These words from Scripture are not just stories from long ago. They speak to us today, as we live in a world filled with confusion, disasters, suffering, and violence.
This year, we have witnessed terrible floods in Vietnam and the Philippines, with hundreds of homes washed away and many families losing everything. In Ōita, Japan, a great fire destroyed an entire neighborhood, leaving much sorrow and devastation. In Sydney, a violent attack against Jewish people during Hanukkah left many afraid. These tragedies hurt our hearts and make us wonder: What does Christmas mean in such a troubled world?
The answer can be found in the manger of Bethlehem. God is not far away—He does not abandon people who suffer in the shadows. God became a tiny child, sharing in the frailty of humanity. Jesus came to journey with us in every sorrow and pain. So, the darkness can never put out the light. Christmas proclaims with power that even in the midst of disaster, grief, and violence, God is always with us, planting seeds of hope.
Recently, Pope Leo XIV spoke out strongly about the painful events in Sydney, saying: “As we witness these acts of hatred, we must let go of the hatred in our own hearts.” His call rings out like Christmas bells, inviting us to live in solidarity, to become instruments of hope and brotherhood. Christmas is not only the light on the tree or the cave, but the light that shines in our hearts, especially when we open them to others.
Dear brothers and sisters, this Christmas, let us pray for those who have suffered from floods, fires, and violence. May God comfort and lift up the families who have lost so much. At the same time, Christmas calls us to act—a sincere prayer, a small gift, a Christmas song, or any little act of kindness is a message of healing. These simple actions help us become bearers of hope in our world today.
When we gaze upon the infant Jesus in the manger, we remember that God chose the small and the poor to come to us. He did not come with power or riches, but with the innocence and weakness of a child. This innocence opens a new way for us—a way of love, hope, and peace. May the light of the infant Jesus shine in every darkness of our lives. May the hope of Christmas become a healing message, helping us through suffering, and may the spirit of solidarity guide humanity toward peace. This Christmas, more than ever, reminds us: Hope never dies. The comfort and brotherhood that come from God are the light that leads our world.
希望と平和を、神の御子の光の中で
親愛なる兄弟姉妹の皆さん、この聖なる時、私たちは共に神の御子の幼子イエスを見つめ、神の光に包まれて黙想します。預言者イザヤはこう告げました： 「闇の中を歩む民は、大いなる光を見た。」 （イザヤ9：1）。そしてヨハネによる福音書も宣言します：「光は闇の中で輝いている。闇はこれに勝たなかった。」 （ヨハネ1：5）。
これらの聖書の言葉は、過去の歴史だけでなく、現代の私たちにも当てはまります。私たちが今生きている世界は、多くの混乱、災害、悲しみ、暴力に満ちています。
今年、私たちはベトナムやフィリピン、スリランカなどでの大きな洪水、多くの家が流され、多くの家族が大切なものを失う悲劇を目の当たりにしました。日本の大分では大きな火災が起こり、地域全体が悲しみと荒廃に包まれました。シドニーでは、ハヌカのお祝いの最中にユダヤ人への攻撃があり、多くの人が恐れを抱きました。これらの出来事は私たちの心を痛め、「このような苦しみの中で、クリスマスにはどんな意味があるのだろう？」と問いかけさせます。
その答えは、ベツレヘムの飼い葉おけに横たわる幼子イエスの中にあります。神は遠い存在ではなく、闇の中で苦しむ人類を見捨てませんでした。神ご自身が小さな幼子となり、私たちと同じ弱さや痛みを分かち合われました。イエスが来られたのは、私たちのすべての悲しみ、苦しみに寄り添うためです。ですから、闇が光を消すことは決してありません。クリスマスは、災害や悲しみ、暴力のただ中でも、神は常に私たちとともにいて、希望の種を蒔いてくださると力強く宣言する日なのです。
教皇レオ14世も、最近のシドニーでの出来事に触れ、「これらの憎しみの行為を目の当たりにしながら、私たちは心の中の敵意を捨てなければなりません」と力強く呼びかけています。この呼びかけは、クリスマスの鐘のように響き、私たちが互いに連帯し、希望と兄弟愛の道具となるよう招いています。クリスマスは、ツリーや馬小屋の飾りだけではなく、私たちの心の中に灯る光です。それは、他者に心を開くときにこそ、真に輝くのです。
愛する兄弟姉妹の皆さん、このクリスマスは、洪水や火災、暴力の被災者のために祈り、神が彼らを慰め、支えてくださるように願いましょう。同時に、クリスマスは私たち一人ひとりが行動するよう促しています。心からの祈りや、分かち合い、クリスマスの歌、どんな小さな善意の行動も、癒しのメッセージとなります。こうした行いが、今の世界に希望の光をもたらすのです。
飼い葉おけの幼子イエスを見つめるとき、神が小さく貧しい姿を選ばれ、私たちのもとに来てくださったことを思い出しましょう。イエスは権力や裕福さではなく、一人の幼子の無垢さと弱さをもって、愛と希望、慰めの道を開いてくださいました。この無垢さが私たちに新しい道を示し、愛と希望、平和への導きとなるのです。
どうか、幼子イエスの光が私たちの人生のすべての闇を照らし、クリスマスの希望が私たちの心を満たしますように。そして、連帯の心が人類を平和へと導きますように。今年のクリスマスが、かつてないほど強く「希望は決して消えない。神から来る慰めと兄弟愛は、世界を照らす光である」と私たちに思い起こさせてくれますように。
